David Staples was released from prison this August after serving 29 time for a murder he didn't commit. Before his release, he was working toward his college degree. That was thanks to a program launched last year that offers a full-time, bachelor's degree in communications to prisoners at the East Moline Correctional Center. The Augustana Prison Education Program, also called APEP, pairs professors and prisoners in a classroom setting.Besides giving prisoners a chance at a free college degree before their release, APEP aims to reduce recidivism.
